Volunteering for Habitat:
Habitat runs on the energy and know-how of our wonderful volunteers. Although most people think of themselves working on one of our job sites, swingin' a hammer, as we say, there are lots and lots of other ways to work for Habitat. They are listed here.
Swingin' A Hammer:
If you decide that construction is the work you wish to do for Habitat, you do not need hands-on skills. You do need to print, complete & sign the following forms and then return it to us via mail/fax or our office.
>>Release & Waiver of Liability Form
>>Release & Waiver of Liability Form (for minors)
We'll give you on-the-job training if you wish. But if you do have special skills and/or experience, we can put them to use – like carpenter skills, hanging dry wall, installing windows and doors, putting up siding or roofing, painting, hanging interior trim, laying tile, etc. Please, climb on board!
Volunteer Orientation and Safety Training
All construction volunteers are required to attend one safety training session.
IMPORTANT:
When you arrive on one of HfHMC's job sites, please sign in with our Volunteer Coordinator and then report to the Site Supervisor.
HfHMC requires that you be 14 years or older to be on our job sites. We suggest you wear sturdy, waterproof footwear – athletic shoes will not do the job. Layers are good any time of the year. Work gloves, denim clothes and a hat are recommended. Also, a measuring tape, pencil and a hammer are all the personal tools you need – HfHMC has plenty of special power and hand tools on every job site. You may want to have some insect repellant in your pocket, as well.
We have a Job-John on all of our building sites. And we provide water and/or other beverages plus morning sweets, lunches and afternoon snacks. Work days are Saturdays from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. Please check the Construction Projects page of this website for the work schedule and job site location(s).
Habitat for Humanity Needs You!
Join us to find out how Habitat for Humanity really works!
Church Relations (Nehemiah) Committee
This committee is for people interested in building and maintaining the vital relationship between Habitat and local churches and religious groups. Responsibilities include making contact with church leaders, building awareness of Habitat and coordinating special projects with these faith communities. Members of all faiths are welcome!
ReStore Committee
Anyone with experience in business, accounting, retail, or public relations would be an excellent fit for this committee, but everyone is welcome! The main purpose of the committee is to plan and open a Habitat ReStore in Mahoning County. Once the store is open, the committee will work with the store manager to oversee the operation of the ReStore.
Site Selection Committee
People who are interested in identifying potential sites for construction. This includes working with local government officials on acquiring land and lots for building, water and sewer hookups and working with the construction committee to be sure lots are "buildable" for a house that is suitable for a partner family. Those who like to dabble in real estate would be natural members. Others welcome too!
Construction Committee
People who have an interest in and may have knowledge of home construction. This can include surveyors, architects, people who know building codes, carpenters, concrete workers, plumbers, electricians, utility people and building supply people. There is a lot to know about building houses. If you have any knowledge at all, or if you would like some on-the-job training, please join us!
Family Selection Committee
This committee is made up of people willing to interview and work with families who have applied be a partner family with Habitat. These people will also check to make certain that the applicant families meet the criteria established by Habitat for homeownership. Working with the Family Support Committee, you will find certain joy in making what seems an unobtainable dream come true for some of these families!
Family Support Committee
People who have good "social/people" skills to work with partner families both before and after construction to be sure that the families know what is required in the area of sweat equity, to provide a record of that time requirement, and to help in the transition of true homeownership. These sponsor/advocate/friends may also help the families in the areas of budgeting and home maintenance.
Resource Development Committee
People to identify and approach potential donors (individual, church, corporate) for either cash or "in-kind" gifts of material, labor, property, or support. This committee also needs people who can develop fundraising material and help with grant writing. You will be surprised to find how eager people are to give when they understand The principles of Habitat!
Public Relations Committee
People who can write articles for newsletters, and one or two who would like to work with local media are needed for this committee. Persons interested in volunteering to serve on this committee may also speak to church groups and other groups and organizations about our projects and our mission. People on this committee help the affiliate "get the word out."
Volunteer Relations Committee
The people who serve on this committee help organize and contact other volunteers to set up times and places to work, whether in the office or on the job site. This group also keeps track of volunteer hours and sets criteria for volunteer recognition.
If you are interested in volunteering, please call 330-743-7244.
The best way to get involved is to come to one of our general, open-to-the-public meetings, held on the third Monday of every month. Sit in with the committee that is doing the work you would like to do, get acquainted and get involved. Go to our Home Page and click on 'Our Meetings' for date, time and place.
